Marvel Rivals is gearing up for its first full season, and while the inclusion of new characters, maps, and battle passes is exciting.
But there’s a pressing issue that needs to be addressed before season one launches: the lack of placement matches in its competitive mode.
The Need for Placement Matches
Currently, all players start in bronze rank, regardless of skill level. While this might be acceptable for the first season, it leads to uneven and frustrating matches, especially as players of varying skills compete against each other.
High-ranked players starting in bronze can quickly climb, but the result is a series of mismatched games that drain the fun from the experience.
A placement system, where players are placed closer to their actual skill level, is crucial for improving the competitive mode.
It would reduce the number of uneven matches, providing a better experience for players of all ranks and ensuring that games are more enjoyable and competitive from the start.
How Other Games Handle Ranked Resets
Marvel Rivals could take a cue from other competitive games like League of Legends, which uses a combination of hidden matchmaking rating (MMR) and placement matches.
In these games, players complete placement matches at the start of each season, and their rank is then adjusted based on their performance. This system helps avoid the frustrating grind of uneven matches and allows players to quickly find their proper rank.
Marvel Rivals already likely uses an MMR system, but without placement matches, players are forced to go through a longer process of ranking up or down. Implementing placement matches would speed up this process and make the competitive experience much more enjoyable.
For Marvel Rivals to truly shine in its competitive mode, it needs to introduce placement matches. This would create a smoother transition into the new season, reduce the number of frustrating mismatches, and provide players with a more balanced and enjoyable ranked experience.
With this change, the competitive scene in Marvel Rivals would be much more engaging and rewarding for players of all skill levels.
