Apple is expected to cut off support for five older Intel-based Mac models with the launch of macOS 26, the next major version of its desktop operating system.
According to a new report from AppleInsider, development builds suggest these models will be left out:
- MacBook Pro (2018)
- iMac (2019)
- iMac Pro (2017)
- Mac mini (2018)
- MacBook Air (2020, Intel-based)
These models were the oldest still supported by macOS Sequoia. Their rumored removal marks the second year in a row Apple is narrowing Intel Mac support while focusing new features on Apple Silicon devices.
The upcoming compatibility list for macOS 26 is expected to include:
- MacBook Pro (2019 and later)
- iMac (2020 and later)
- Mac Pro (2019 and later)
- Mac mini (M1 and later)
- Mac Studio (all models)
- MacBook Air (M1 and later)
In addition to trimming compatibility, macOS 26 is set to bring major visual changes, taking design inspiration from visionOS. Expect 3D translucent materials, rounded window corners, and what may be the most significant visual overhaul to macOS in years.
The first developer beta of macOS 26 is rumored to be over 17GB, about 2GB larger than the initial macOS Sequoia beta. Apple is also shifting its naming strategy to a consistent year-based format, dropping the old numbering pattern—thus the name macOS 26, aligning with 2026.
Apple is expected to unveil macOS 26 during its WWDC keynote on June 9, followed by an immediate beta release for developers. A public beta should arrive in July, with the official public release likely in the fall.
