James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has shed light on the surprising development of the upcoming Clayface movie, set to release on September 11, 2026.
Written by Mike Flanagan, the film focuses on the iconic DC character. Despite initial skepticism, Gunn shared how the project gained traction due to its compelling premise.
In an interview with io9, Gunn revealed that he had no plans for a Clayface movie until Flanagan pitched an idea that impressed him. “Mike came in and pitched this wonderful idea,” Gunn said. “I was like, ‘Damn, I can’t believe you got me to want to make a Clayface movie.’”
Gunn further explained the process, highlighting Flanagan’s evolving drafts: “First draft is great. Second draft is even better. And then I’m like, ‘Let’s do it.’”
Gunn emphasized that the DCU is prioritizing quality over churning out numerous projects. “If there’s quality stuff, we can find a way to work it in,” he stated. However, Gunn also cautioned fans about relying on rumors.
He clarified that while many projects are in development, not all will make it to production. “Just because they’re in development, that doesn’t mean [DC is] going to make that movie,” he warned, urging fans to temper their expectations.
The Clayface movie aligns with Gunn’s broader vision for the DCU: creating unique, high-quality films that resonate with fans.
He pointed to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as another example, chosen for its strong story rather than its place in a grand narrative. Gunn emphasized, “Everything has to be good. Quality comes first in every project we do.”
The decision to green-light a Clayface film underscores DC Studios’ willingness to take creative risks. By exploring lesser-known characters and unusual premises, the DCU aims to build goodwill with fans through quality storytelling.
Gunn’s approach focuses on delivering standout films rather than chasing box office numbers, a strategy that could redefine the franchise’s future.
As the DCU ventures into uncharted territory, fans can look forward to a mix of bold, innovative projects.
With Clayface set to hit theaters in 2026, this shift in focus might just pave the way for a new era of superhero cinema.
