Grand Theft Auto VI may not run at 60 frames per second on PlayStation 5, according to top tech analysts. Despite showing off impressive visuals in its trailer, experts say 60 FPS performance is highly unlikely on current-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Digital Foundry, a respected technical analysis group, studied the recent GTA 6 trailer, which was captured on PS5. Their team found the game running at 1440p resolution but likely capped at 30 FPS with ray tracing and other advanced features enabled.
The trailer used letterboxing, which means the true gameplay resolution is closer to 1152p, not full 1440p. Experts warn that dynamic resolution and intense scenes may lower this further, making 60 FPS nearly impossible without major visual compromises.
Running GTA VI at 60 FPS would likely require dropping the resolution to around 600p, which is not acceptable for a game of this scale and quality. That’s why Digital Foundry’s experts agree 30 FPS is the most realistic option for base consoles.
One analyst mentioned a possible 40 FPS mode, but called it a long shot. Historically, GTA games have always launched at 30 FPS, especially on consoles, because of their large and complex open worlds.
Rockstar Games may release improved versions later—just like with GTA V—once newer hardware like PS6 or PC versions become available. In time, fans might see better frame rates and resolution, but not at launch.
In short, don’t expect 60 FPS on PS5 or Xbox Series X when GTA VI arrives.
