Google Tasks May Be Heading to the Google Graveyard

Google Tasks

Google is known for shutting down apps, and it seems Google Tasks might be next. The standalone app hasn’t been officially discontinued, but its features are now fully integrated into Google Calendar, Google Search, and Google Assistant. This raises questions about the app’s future.

Google Tasks has always been a simple app for managing to-do lists. You can create tasks, set reminders, and organize lists, but it lacks advanced features like collaboration or file attachments.

While this simplicity can be helpful, it also makes the app less competitive compared to others like Todoist or TickTick.

Tasks Is Now Built Into Other Google Apps

You no longer need to install the standalone Google Tasks app. You can access it directly from Google Calendar by tapping the Tasks icon. It’s also available in Google Search and Google Assistant.

On the web, Tasks is already integrated into Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

This deep integration makes the standalone app feel unnecessary. With just one extra tap, you can access Tasks within other Google apps.

Other Apps Do It Better

Google Tasks is good for basic to-do lists, but it doesn’t offer advanced features like sublists, file attachments, or collaboration tools.

Competitors like Todoist and TickTick provide these features, making them better choices for most users.

Even Google’s own apps, like Google Docs, can do what Tasks does and more. For example, you can create checkbox lists with reminders directly in Docs.

What Happens If Google Shuts Down Tasks?

If Google decides to remove the standalone app, users won’t lose much. The same features are already available in other Google apps.

The main downside could be the loss of Tasks widgets, which are useful for quick access to lists.

Still, many users may prefer switching to a third-party app with more features. Unless Google updates Tasks with significant improvements, it’s likely to remain a basic tool or be phased out entirely.

For now, the future of Google Tasks remains uncertain. Whether it stays or goes, there are better task management options available.
