Google Play Introduces ‘Slide to Buy’ Gesture for Safer Payments

Google Play Store

Google has officially replaced its ‘1-tap buy’ payment button on the Play Store with a new ‘Slide to buy’ feature. This update is designed to help prevent accidental purchases when buying apps, books, movies, or TV shows.

Previously, users confirmed purchases with a simple tap on a blue button at the bottom of the payment screen. Now, that button is gone. In its place, users will see a pill-shaped ‘Slide to buy’ bar, slightly larger with a sliding handle that shows two arrows for guidance.

The first time you use it, a short animation shows you how to complete the slide. There’s also a slight bounce effect to make the gesture more noticeable.

According to Google, this change adds a little extra friction to buying, making accidental purchases less likely. Before this update, users had to tap twice at different spots on the screen to confirm. Now, the process is a tap and slide.

This update is rolling out widely with version 46.5.19-31 of the Google Play Store. The ‘Slide to buy’ feature is also showing up in purchase screens within the Google TV app.

With this new gesture, Google aims to make purchases safer and give users more control before they spend.
