Google Maps Finally Testing Truck Navigation Features

Google Maps is finally beginning to address one of its most requested features: navigation for trucks and large vehicles. The update first appears in vehicles with built-in Android Automotive systems.

The new feature allows drivers to input cargo dimensions when using a trailer, helping them avoid routes with low bridges or tunnels. Currently, this is available for specific 2025 models including:

  • Chevrolet Tahoe
  • Chevrolet Suburban
  • GMC Yukon

This development is significant because:

  • Google Maps previously offered no specific navigation for large vehicles
  • Drivers of trucks and motorhomes had to use specialized navigation apps
  • Using standard car navigation with large vehicles could lead to dangerous situations
  • Routes might include roads with size and weight restrictions

While this update is limited, it suggests Google may be working toward full truck navigation features. Currently, truck drivers must rely on specialized apps from companies like Sygic or dedicated GPS navigators.

The main challenge in developing truck navigation is creating a comprehensive database of:

  • Road restrictions
  • Bridge heights
  • Weight limits
  • Vehicle dimension limits
  • Cargo type restrictions

Google plans to expand this feature to more “compatible vehicles” in the future, though full truck navigation support hasn’t been officially announced.
