Facebook Bans Linux Content, Calls It a Security Threat

On January 19, 2025, Facebook made a controversial decision to label Linux-related content as “cybersecurity threats.”

This move has caused a stir, with many users reporting that posts about Linux or links to sites like DistroWatch are being removed or blocked.

Some accounts have even been locked for sharing Linux-related material.

Irony in Facebook’s Actions

The irony of this decision is not lost on many. Facebook itself relies heavily on Linux for its infrastructure, and the company regularly posts job ads seeking Linux developers.

Despite this, the platform now categorizes Linux discussions as malware.

Users Speak Out

Many users have voiced their frustration, claiming that they can no longer post about Linux or share links to Linux-related websites.

Some even tested the system by posting Linux-related links, only to have their posts removed with warnings about “misleading links” or “security threats.”

Facebook’s Changing Policies

This action contradicts the company’s previous statements about reducing censorship and promoting free speech.

The inconsistency has raised questions about whether Facebook is experimenting with new ways to control what users can discuss.
