Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, is developing Grokipedia, an AI-powered encyclopedia aimed at offering a more accurate and neutral alternative to Wikipedia. Musk claims the platform will be a “massive improvement” over the widely used online encyclopedia.
Musk has long criticized Wikipedia, calling it “woke” and suggesting it should be defunded. In January, he objected to a Wikipedia entry alleging he made a Nazi-like salute at a Trump inauguration event. Grokipedia is intended to address what Musk and some critics see as bias in Wikipedia’s coverage.
The platform will use xAI’s Grok chatbot, which has been trained on web data including public tweets. Musk says Grok can analyze Wikipedia pages to identify inaccuracies, half-truths, or missing context, and rewrite pages to correct them. However, Grok has faced its own issues, including generating controversial output in the past.
Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales and other critics argue that the platform focuses on accuracy, while Musk’s platforms have faced criticism for spreading misinformation. Wikipedia remains one of the most visited websites globally, and experts caution that creating a credible alternative will be challenging.
Musk has not announced a launch date for Grokipedia. The project is expected to appeal to his supporters and commentators who perceive bias in existing encyclopedias. The move is part of Musk’s broader strategy to leverage AI in reshaping digital information, following his recent initiatives targeting software and AI-driven platforms.
