SpaceX is developing a new version of its Starship rocket, the Starship V4, which will feature 42 Raptor engines, an increase from the current 33-engine Super Heavy booster. The upgrade is designed to boost thrust and payload capacity, supporting future missions to Mars and beyond.

The Starship V4 is expected to stand 420 feet tall with a 69-foot cargo bay. Elon Musk announced the 42-engine configuration as a nod to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, where 42 is “the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.” Its first flight is scheduled for 2027.

SpaceX is preparing for its 10th Starship test flight from the Starbase facility in Texas. The mission will test booster separation, dummy Starlink satellite deployment, heat shields, and steering systems during reentry. Previous tests have faced explosions and technical setbacks.

The Raptor 4 engine, an upgraded version of the current Raptor 2, is expected to provide higher thrust and efficiency to meet the demands of the 42-engine Starship V4.

Musk envisions the Starship V4 as a key part of SpaceX’s plans for interplanetary colonization, including establishing a human settlement on Mars.
