ChatGPT Plus Users Can Now Record and Transcribe Meetings on Mac

OpenAI has expanded access to Record Mode, a new AI-powered note-taking feature, to ChatGPT Plus subscribers using the macOS application after initially launching it for business users in June.

The feature allows users to record system audio during meetings and conference calls through a small “rec” button in the ChatGPT app. Once activated, Record Mode captures audio locally on the Mac device without requiring the AI assistant to join calls as a visible participant.

After recording sessions end, the audio is uploaded to OpenAI’s servers for transcription and analysis. The system then generates structured notes including summaries, key points, action items, and follow-up questions from the recorded conversations.

Record Mode was first demonstrated during a ChatGPT for business presentation on YouTube last month before being made available to Team, Enterprise, and Education users. The rollout to individual Plus subscribers represents an expansion of the feature to OpenAI’s consumer premium tier.

The local recording capability distinguishes ChatGPT’s approach from other AI meeting assistants that must appear as meeting participants to capture audio. This allows for more discreet recording during calls and conferences.

OpenAI has acknowledged privacy concerns surrounding the feature and advises users to check local laws and obtain appropriate consent before recording others. The company states that users are responsible for ensuring their use of Record Mode complies with applicable laws, which may vary by location.

The feature is currently available only on the macOS version of ChatGPT, with no announcement yet regarding availability on other platforms. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month and includes access to advanced features and higher usage limits compared to the free tier.

Recording conversations without consent is illegal in many jurisdictions, with laws varying significantly between countries and regions. Some areas require consent from all parties involved in a conversation, while others only require consent from one participant.

The introduction of Record Mode reflects the growing integration of AI tools into workplace productivity applications, as companies seek to automate routine tasks like meeting documentation and follow-up actions.
