Microsoft has begun showing full-screen messages to Windows 10 users, encouraging them to purchase new Windows 11 computers ahead of Windows 10’s end of support in October 2025. The prompts promote “Copilot Plus PCs” and promise “the ultimate Windows 11 experience.”
While Microsoft is advertising new hardware, the company doesn’t mention in these prompts that Windows 10 users can continue using their systems after the support deadline.
Users will have the option to purchase Extended Security Updates for $30 per year, marking the first time Microsoft has offered this service to consumers.
The push for new hardware likely stems from Windows 11’s strict system requirements – it only runs on CPUs from 2018 or newer. Despite Microsoft’s efforts, Windows 11 adoption remains lower than Windows 10, though it briefly topped gaming charts on Steam this summer.
Interestingly, Microsoft has sent mixed signals by continuing to develop new features for Windows 10, even reopening its beta program in June 2024 for an operating system it wants users to move away from.
