Apple is known for its careful approach to entering new product categories, but a recently uncovered 2008 patent shows that the company had been developing its Vision Pro headset for at least 15 years before its official launch in 2024.
The patent, which describes a wearable display capable of simulating a virtual environment with intelligent sensors, closely matches the final product. These sensors were designed to detect head and eye movements, adjusting the video to immerse the wearer in a lifelike experience.
Macworldโs Dan Moren highlighted the remarkable similarity between the patent and the Vision Pro, recalling how the technology needed to bring the concept to life wasnโt available back then.
Despite this, Apple had a clear vision of what it wanted to achieve, pushing the development forward for years.
The big question now is how long it will take before Apple can produce a more affordable version of the Vision Pro without compromising on its capabilities.
Reports suggest that Apple is focusing on a second-generation Pro device, possibly powered by the M5 chip, while putting this goal on the back-burner for now.
