Netflix is developing a new live-action Stranger Things spinoff, following the conclusion of the main series with Season 5 on December 31, 2025. The project is being created by the show’s creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, but will tell a completely new story set in the same fictional universe.
The Duffer Brothers have confirmed that the spinoff will have no direct connection to the original storyline involving Hawkins, the Upside Down, or central characters such as Eleven, Vecna, or Hopper. According to Ross Duffer, the main Stranger Things story has now fully ended.
The new series will feature an entirely different setting, time period, and cast. None of the original actors are expected to return. Matt Duffer described the project as a “clean slate,” designed to stand on its own rather than continue existing character arcs.
The show will also move away from the 1980s setting that defined the original series. While the exact decade has not been revealed, the creators have said they want to explore a new era while keeping the tone and spirit that made Stranger Things popular.
Although the Duffers are deeply involved as creators and executive producers, they will not serve as day-to-day showrunners. They have assembled a separate creative team to manage the project, which they say has been in development as an idea for several years.
In interviews, the Duffers said the spinoff will feel very different from the original series but will still reflect its core themes, including adventure, science fiction, and emotional storytelling. They stressed that the project will not expand into a large shared universe with multiple interconnected shows.
The creators also confirmed that the Season 5 finale includes a subtle hint about the spinoff’s direction. They described it as a small moment rather than an obvious teaser, and said it is not connected to commonly discussed fan theories such as references to Montauk or younger characters.
The live-action spinoff is still in early development. Netflix has not announced a title, cast, storyline, or release date. The project remains separate from the animated series Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, which is scheduled for release in 2026.
For now, fans will need to wait, as the Duffers say it may take several years before the live-action spinoff is ready to be released.
