Threads Experiments With Long-Form Text to Rival X

Meta’s social platform Threads is testing a new feature that allows users to share long-form text directly within posts, the company confirmed on Thursday.

The feature lets users attach a block of text to a post instead of creating multiple linked updates. According to Meta, the tool is designed for sharing “deeper thoughts, news snippets, book excerpts, and more,” with basic formatting options available.

App researcher Radu Oncescu first spotted the feature on iOS, while Threads user Robert P. Nickson shared a preview showing a gray box containing part of the text. Viewers can tap the box to expand and read the full content.

By enabling longer posts, Threads aims to attract and retain writers, journalists, and creators who might otherwise turn to blogs or newsletter platforms like Substack. It also eliminates common workarounds, such as posting screenshots of notes, to bypass character limits.

The move comes as rival platform X (formerly Twitter) offers its own long-form content tool, “Articles,” though it is limited to Premium subscribers. Unlike X, Threads’ feature is currently accessible to all users, though Meta has not ruled out changes. At present, Threads only supports text, while X allows images and videos within longer posts.

The feature is still in testing but is expected to expand to more users in the future. It joins other recent additions to Threads, including direct messages, custom feeds, AI enhancements, and integration with the fediverse.

Threads recently reported over 400 million monthly active users, two years after launch. X continues to lead with more than 600 million monthly active users, according to previous statements by former CEO Linda Yaccarino.
