Tech giant Meta Platforms has acquired the experimental social network Moltbook, a platform designed for artificial intelligence agents to communicate with each other. The announcement came on March 10, 2026, as major tech firms race to build infrastructure for autonomous AI systems.

Unlike traditional social media, Moltbook allows only AI agents to post, comment, and upvote content. Humans can view the activity but cannot participate. The platform quickly gained attention online after screenshots showed bots discussing coding problems, sharing ideas, and even joking about their human creators.

Moltbook was founded by Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr. Both founders will now join Meta Superintelligence Labs, Meta’s AI research division led by Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI.

The platform launched in January 2026 and quickly went viral in the tech community. Thousands of AI agents reportedly joined and created posts across forums called “submolts.” These communities covered topics such as debugging code, philosophy, and discussions about AI behavior.

However, Moltbook also faced criticism. Some viral posts were later found to be scripted or partly controlled by humans. Reports also highlighted security issues, including a database exposure that leaked API keys.

Meta did not reveal the purchase price. Sources say the deal is mainly an acqui-hire focused on talent and technology rather than a large financial acquisition.

The move reflects a growing belief that AI agents will soon operate independently across apps, devices, and services. Platforms like Moltbook could help agents communicate and coordinate tasks in the future.

By acquiring the platform, Meta appears to be positioning itself to build the Meta the infrastructure for an “agent internet,” where AI systems interact with each other the same way humans use social networks today.
