Burnley Football Club have confirmed the signing of 21-year-old midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu from Chelsea on a permanent deal. The French player has signed a five-year contract as the club prepares for its return to the Premier League in the 2025-26 season.
Ugochukwu completed his medical at Turf Moor following a strong loan spell at Southampton, where he played 31 games and impressed with his strength and versatility in midfield. He is expected to play a key role under head coach Scott Parker.
Ugochukwu joined Chelsea from Rennes in 2023 for £23.5 million. He made 15 appearances for the Blues in the 2023-24 season, mostly as a substitute. During his time at Southampton, he scored a last-minute equalizer against West Ham in April and started the club’s final 11 league matches.
Burnley see Ugochukwu as a direct replacement for Josh Brownhill, who left the club after scoring 18 goals last season. Ugochukwu joins a squad that has already added 10 new players this summer, including Kyle Walker, Axel Tuanzebe, and Bashir Humphreys.
The transfer fee was not disclosed. Chelsea, managing a large squad under new head coach Enzo Maresca, chose a permanent deal over loan offers from other European clubs.
Fans have praised the move, calling Ugochukwu a strong addition with Premier League experience. While some Chelsea supporters were unhappy to see him leave, many believe Burnley made a smart move to boost their midfield ahead of a tough top-flight season.
