A new movie about Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, is set to be released in 2026. The film, titled Artificial, will focus on the dramatic events surrounding Altman’s five-day firing and re-hiring at OpenAI, capturing a tense moment in the world of artificial intelligence.

The $40 million film is funded by Amazon and is expected to stir controversy in the tech industry. Early reports suggest the movie will portray many real-life figures in a less-than-flattering light, including OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, Elon Musk, and Dario Amodei.

Andrew Garfield, known for roles in The Social Network and Spider-Man, will play Sam Altman. Russian actor Yura Borisov, nominated for an Oscar for Anora, is cast as Ilya Sutskever. Monica Barbaro, who appeared in the Oscar-nominated A Complete Unknown, will portray Mira Murati, OpenAI’s former chief technology officer.

Sutskever’s character is reportedly the only one to emerge positively from the story. He was a key figure at OpenAI but voted to oust Altman in 2023 and later expressed regret. He left the company six months later to start a new AI research lab.

Murati temporarily took charge at OpenAI during Altman’s absence before returning to her CTO role. She left OpenAI in 2024 to found a startup focused on AI-human collaboration.

The film aims to give audiences an inside look at one of the most dramatic episodes in recent tech history. Fans of business dramas can look forward to Artificial next year to see how Hollywood portrays the complex dynamics within OpenAI.
