Threads is finally adding direct messages (DMs), the feature users have requested most. The new messaging system launches globally on Tuesday, marking another step in Threads’ journey away from Instagram.
Basic Messaging Features
The DMs start with simple features:
- One-on-one chats
- Emoji reactions
- Spam reporting
- Mute options
More advanced features like group messaging and inbox filters will come later. Users can only control who messages them by following or not following people.
Not Available Everywhere
The feature launches for users 18 and older in most markets where Threads operates. However, it won’t be available in Japan, Australia, the U.K., and the EU at launch.
No Encryption Planned
Unlike other platforms, Threads won’t encrypt its DMs. Emily Dalton Smith, Threads VP of Product, said encryption isn’t important for their goal of connecting people about current events.
“It’s really about just connecting directly and talking to people about whatever is happening now,” Smith explained.
Growing Apart from Instagram
Despite being built on Instagram’s foundation, Threads users are creating different networks. Over one-third of daily Threads users have less than 50% overlap between their Instagram and Threads connections.
“Instagram is really for creativity and Threads is really for perspectives,” Smith noted.
Testing Independence
Meta is testing ways for people to use Threads without Instagram accounts. This includes:
- Logging in with Facebook accounts (in Europe)
- Creating Threads-only accounts
- Using Threads on the web without logging in
New Highlight Feature
Threads also introduced a “highlighter” feature that emphasizes interesting conversations and trending topics. This could expand to highlight active community members and conversations users might want to join.
Focus on Community
The app is working to help users find communities built around specific interests. Unlike Instagram’s creator-focused approach, Threads has developed its own unique creator community.
No AI Monetization Plans
While Meta could integrate AI features like competitors do, Smith said they’re focused on getting advertising right first. The company uses AI behind the scenes for things like trending topic summaries.
Growing User Base
Threads now has 350 million monthly active users, far more than competitors like Bluesky’s 37 million. However, it’s still small compared to Meta’s billion-user platforms.
The DM feature was tested earlier this month in Hong Kong, Thailand, Argentina, and Brazil before the global rollout.
