Joseph Kosinski, director of Top Gun: Maverick, has revealed new details about the long-awaited Top Gun 3 and his upcoming Formula One (F1) movie starring Brad Pitt.
Kosinski spoke to GQ about his new film F1, which hits cinemas on June 25. The movie follows Sonny Hayes (played by Pitt), a former racing star who returns to the track for one final shot at victory. He races for a fictional F1 team called Apex and must learn to work with a rookie driver, played by Damson Idris.
The film is packed with real-life Formula One elements. It was shot at actual F1 races, with cameos from stars like Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris. Kosinski believes filming in real environments helped the movie feel more exciting and real.
When asked about Top Gun 3, Kosinski confirmed that the story is in development and hinted that it will be even more ambitious than the last film. He described it as “an existential crisis” for Maverick, the character played by Tom Cruise. Kosinski also confirmed Cruise will play a major role in the next movie.
“There’s still more story to tell for him,” Kosinski said. “There’s one last ride.”
The script is being written by Ehren Kruger, who also wrote the F1 film.
Kosinski also joked about a possible future team-up between Cruise and Pitt, imagining their racing characters from Days of Thunder and F1 facing off. While nothing is confirmed, fans are excited by the idea.
Kosinski ended the interview by saying he is focused on his current projects but remains a fan of other franchises, like James Bond.
