DC Studios CEO James Gunn confirmed that a heavily criticized scene from a Superman trailer was not included in the final cut of the upcoming DC Universe movie. The scene featured an awkward-looking CGI shot of David Corenswet flying as Superman.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn addressed fan criticism about the poor visual effects in the flying scene. He assured viewers that the problematic shot would not appear in the finished film.

Technical Issues with Trailer Shot

Gunn explained that the criticized scene was created for a TV commercial and was not a finished visual effects shot. “It was a photograph of his face and him flying. It was a photograph of a drone flying in front of an actual background,” he said.

The director noted that all the individual elements were real, but they were combined in a way that looked unnatural. “So all the pieces were real, but it was incorporated in kind of a funky way. I didn’t love the shot, so it’s not even the shot that’s in the movie,” Gunn added.

Director’s Oversight

Gunn admitted that the poor-quality shot made it into the TV spot due to his oversight. He said he is usually careful when reviewing trailer footage but sometimes forgets to examine commercials as closely.

“Sometimes I’m pretty strict about when I’m going through a trailer and looking at each of the shots, but sometimes the commercials, I forget to look at this closely. So that one kind of got by me,” the director explained.

Movie Details

Superman is written and directed by Gunn and will launch the new DC Universe. The film stars David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

The movie is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 11, 2025. According to the synopsis, Gunn’s version will deliver “a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.”
