Tesla Model S and X Refresh Sparks Backlash Over Price Hike and Downgrades

Tesla’s latest update for its luxury electric cars — the Model S and Model X — has sparked frustration among EV fans. The refreshed versions are heavier, slower, and more expensive than before, with many questioning if the upgrades are worth the higher price tag.

Both cars are now $5,000 more expensive across all versions. The Model S starts at $86,630, while the high-performance Model S Plaid now begins at $101,630. The Model X costs $91,630 for the base version, and $106,630 for the Plaid.

One of the most disappointing changes is the reduction in top speed for the Model S Plaid. Tesla used to promote it as a 322 km/h beast, but now it’s officially listed with a 240 km/h limit. Although the range has improved slightly, fans see this as a downgrade in performance.

The cars have also gained weight, with the Model S Plaid adding 11.7 kg and the Model X Plaid piling on 83 kg. While Tesla claims this extra weight improves ride comfort and adds better noise insulation, critics argue that it undermines the performance that once defined these flagship EVs.

Other updates include multi-color ambient lighting, a front bumper camera with washer, new wheel designs, and a Frost Blue paint option. But compared to rivals offering next-gen features like steer-by-wire and 800-volt charging, these tweaks feel small.

Even the once-promoted yoke steering wheel is now optional — a $1,000 extra only for Plaid models — hinting at Tesla walking back the controversial design.

With sales of the Model S and X slowing, many feel Tesla’s focus has shifted to newer models like the Cybertruck, leaving these once-flagship cars without the big innovation fans expect.
