Apple Reportedly Developing Steam-Like Game Launcher for Mac and iOS

Apple is reportedly working on a new dedicated gaming app that would serve as a centralized launcher for games on Mac and iOS, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

The app, expected to be announced at WWDC 2025, would unify access to App Store games, Apple Arcade, and potentially even third-party games from outside the App Store.

The proposed launcher would feature achievements, leaderboards, and communication tools, mirroring popular platforms like Steam. Gurman’s report hints that the Mac version might support integration with external game libraries, such as Steam or Epic Games, although details remain unclear.

Apple’s gaming ecosystem has seen modest growth in recent years. The company recently acquired RAC7, developer of Sneaky Sasquatch, and has supported major game ports like Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Resident Evil 4 on its platforms. Still, Windows PCs and consoles dominate the market, largely due to better game support and compatibility.

Despite the power of Apple’s M-series chips, game availability on macOS remains limited. Critics suggest that a true breakthrough would require Apple to introduce a compatibility layer—similar to Valve’s Proton, which enables Windows games to run on Linux.

Without such a solution, Apple faces the ongoing problem of limited Mac gaming support caused by a lack of developer interest—which itself stems from a small user base of Mac gamers.

While the rumored launcher could simplify game management on Apple devices, many believe it won’t significantly improve gaming on Mac without broader compatibility efforts.
