Anthropic has started rolling out a new voice mode for its Claude chatbot apps, currently in beta. This feature allows users of the Claude mobile app to have full spoken conversations with the AI, initially in English. According to Anthropic’s official announcements, the rollout will continue over the next few weeks.
The voice mode is powered by Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4 model. It lets users speak to Claude and hear voice responses, making it easier to use the app when typing isn’t convenient. The app also displays key points on screen while Claude speaks, enhancing the conversation experience.
Many AI companies now offer similar voice chat options, including OpenAI, Google with Gemini Live, and xAI with Voice Mode for Grok. These tools help make AI conversations feel more natural by replacing typing with speech.
Anthropic’s voice mode allows users to chat about documents and images, choose from five different voice options, and switch between voice and text during a conversation. After chatting, users can see a transcript and summary of their session.
There are some limitations. Free users typically get 20–30 voice conversations before hitting usage limits. Only paid subscribers can use a Google Workspace connector that lets voice mode access Google Calendar and Gmail. Access to Google Docs via voice is available only to Claude Enterprise subscribers.
Anthropic’s Chief Product Officer Mike Krieger confirmed plans for voice features earlier this year. The company has also discussed partnerships with Amazon and voice-focused startup ElevenLabs, but it is unclear if these deals directly affected the new voice mode.
