Apple is getting ready to launch its first foldable device in the second half of next year, according to a new supply-chain report.

The company has now selected Lens Technology, a Chinese manufacturer, to supply the ultra-thin glass (UTG) that will cover the folding display.

Apple’s Foldable Screen Strategy

Lens Technology will reportedly handle about 70% of Apple’s UTG orders, while Corning will provide the raw materials.

Apple chose Lens Technology due to its expertise in glass etching, strengthening, and minimizing side cracks. The company is expanding its UTG production line later this year to meet Apple’s demands.

To improve durability, Apple plans to thin only the central part of the UTG, near the hinge. This will allow the glass to fold smoothly while keeping the rest of the screen stronger.

Who Else is Supplying Apple?

While Lens Technology will handle most of the UTG supply, South Korean companies Dowoo Insys and UTI may also contribute as secondary suppliers.

Dowoo Insys already holds two patents related to central UTG thinning, a technique Apple also patented.

Meanwhile, Samsung Display is expected to exclusively supply the foldable display itself, reinforcing its long-standing partnership with Apple.

What’s Next?

With Apple finalizing its UTG supplier, production for its first foldable device is taking shape. More details about the device, including its design and specs, could surface in the coming months. Stay tuned!
