The Chinese AI app DeepSeek is no longer available on Apple and Google app stores in Italy after the country’s data protection authority launched an inquiry into its handling of personal data.
Privacy Concerns Trigger Investigation
Italy’s Garante regulator has demanded details on what data DeepSeek collects, where it is stored, and whether it is sent to China.
It also wants assurances about child safety, bias prevention, and election interference risks. DeepSeek has 20 days to respond.
Regulatory Pressure in Europe
Ireland’s Data Protection Commission has also requested information about how DeepSeek processes data for Irish users.
Meanwhile, Germany’s interior ministry is monitoring AI applications for potential election interference ahead of its national vote on February 23.
App Still Functional for Some Users
While new downloads are blocked, DeepSeek still works for users in Italy who previously installed it. The app remains available in other European Union countries and the UK.
Previous AI Bans in Italy
Italy has a history of strict AI regulation. In 2023, it briefly banned ChatGPT over privacy concerns. The latest move signals continued scrutiny over AI data practices in Europe.
