Find My Device Network Gets Better — Is It Worth Using Now?

Google Find My Device

Android’s Find My Device network has been evolving, and it seems to be working much better in 2025 than it did when it first launched in 2024. Initially, the network faced challenges, but now, many users are noticing improvements.

What Went Wrong Initially? When Google launched its Find My Device network in mid-2024, it struggled to compete with Apple’s AirTag and Samsung’s Galaxy network.

The main issue was a privacy-focused decision that limited tracking to “high-traffic” areas, making it less effective in rural regions.

Additionally, Google required two devices to locate the same tracker, which made it harder to track devices, especially in markets dominated by iPhones.

Recent Improvements: Google has made several changes since then. One major update is the increased visibility of a prompt in the Find My Device app, urging users to enable tracking in all areas, not just high-traffic ones.

This change has led to a better experience, as trackers now connect faster and are located more quickly.

Real-World Results: In tests, such as one at CES 2025, Android trackers like the Moto Tag are now providing location updates as quickly as Apple’s AirTag.

This improvement is likely due to firmware and app updates, as well as the increased adoption of “low-traffic” tracking.

Should You Use It? Despite a rough start, the Find My Device network seems to be improving steadily. If you’ve been using it, you might notice faster and more reliable performance. If you haven’t tried it yet, it may be worth a second look.
