Google and Samsung Challenge Meta and Apple with New Mixed-Reality Headset

Google and Samsung are teaming up to disrupt the mixed-reality market, introducing a new collaboration aimed at competing with Meta and Apple.

Google has developed an XR version of Android, tailored for virtual and augmented reality, while Samsung is building the first headset for the platform, codenamed Project Moohan.

The new XR software is designed to allow other companies, such as Sony, Xreal, and Lynx Mixed Reality, to create their own VR and AR devices.

Google aims to repeat the success it had with Android, now with a focus on incorporating artificial intelligence into XR experiences, like analyzing objects through external cameras.

Samsung’s Project Moohan shares some similarities with Apple’s Vision Pro but promises a more comfortable and lighter design.

The device, expected next year, will likely undercut the Vision Pro’s hefty price tag of $3,499. Samsung’s headset will be powered by Qualcomm’s XR2 Gen 2 chip, similar to Meta’s Quest 3.

Despite their partnership, Google has ruled out creating a headset of its own, while Samsung has no plans for a dedicated XR operating system. For now, both companies are focused on collaborating to build a diverse XR ecosystem.
