Netflix has reached over 10 million subscribers in Japan, marking a milestone in 2024. The growth comes as Netflix’s Japanese-language content, including Tokyo Swindlers, The Queen of Villains, and The Boyfriend, gains significant popularity, helping the platform stand out from local broadcasters.
Kaata Sakamoto, Netflix’s Vice President of Content for Japan, shared their satisfaction with this year’s successful productions, highlighting the increasing demand for local content.
Despite the global popularity of English-language hits like One Piece and Stranger Things, Netflix has focused on catering to Japan’s strong preference for domestic shows.
Netflix has also signed a five-year deal with Hitoshi One, the director of Tokyo Swindlers, to further boost local productions. With anime also contributing to its success, Netflix’s Japanese content is now its third-most-viewed non-English content globally, following Korean and Spanish.
This rise in subscribers is part of Netflix’s broader global growth strategy, supported by an ad-supported tier and a growing number of international shows.
