FromSoftware’s parent company, Kadokawa Corporation, has announced its openness to a full acquisition deal with Sony, pending further discussions.
The two companies have been in talks for years but have yet to finalize an agreement over the terms of the deal.
However, according to a recent Bloomberg report, the negotiations are now at a formal stage, indicating a potential breakthrough.
Kadokawa, a powerhouse in the media industry, owns over 100,000 anime, sci-fi novels, and comics, and holds stakes in several game development companies, including Elden Ring creator FromSoftware.
The company has also confirmed 26 new titles in development, including 20 for consoles and six for mobile.
One of these upcoming titles is Action Game Maker, developed by Kadokawa’s subsidiary Gotcha Gotcha Games, slated for release in 2025.
A potential acquisition by Sony would significantly enhance its position in the anime market. It could also open doors for cinematic and video game adaptations of Kadokawa’s fantasy universes, potentially attracting a larger global audience.
Kadokawa CEO Takeshi Natsuno has confirmed that the company has received an initial letter of intent from Sony to acquire its shares, but no decision has been made as of yet.
