Netflix has removed a promotional poster for Arcane season two after fans discovered it was made using artificial intelligence (AI). The issue came to light when viewers noticed oddly shaped hands in the paused show image.
Arcane brand lead Alex Shahmiri confirmed on X that using AI art was a mistake. “We have a strict stance of no AI for anything relating to Arcane because it’s disrespectful to the incredible artists who worked on the show,” Shahmiri stated.
The show, created by Riot Games and French studio Fortiche, is known for its unique mix of digital and hand-drawn artwork. This makes the AI poster particularly out of place.
This isn’t the first time AI art has caused controversy in streaming shows. Disney faced similar criticism when Marvel’s Secret Invasion used AI-generated art in its credits sequence.
While AI tools like DALL-E and MidJourney can create images quickly and cheaply, they raise concerns about artistic integrity and proper credit for creative work. Some companies, like digital art app Procreate, have taken strong stances against using AI in their products.
The incident highlights growing tensions between traditional artistic creation and AI-generated content in entertainment.
