K-pop girl group aespa has become the most successful female group in South Korea this year. The group, which started in 2020, has broken multiple records and changed the K-pop landscape.
Their achievements are impressive. Both their albums “Armageddon” and “Whiplash” sold over 1 million copies in their first week. Their hit song “Supernova” stayed at number one for 15 weeks, setting a new record. Currently, two of their songs, “Whiplash” and “Up,” remain in the Top 5 of music charts.
The group consists of four members: Karina and Winter from Korea, Ningning from China, and Giselle from Japan. They started with an innovative virtual reality concept but changed their style after their company founder left. This change worked in their favor, helping them mix popular appeal with unique concepts.
Their success has put them ahead of other popular groups like NewJeans and IVE. The group is known for their detailed choreography and strong performances. Unlike their early days when only some members stood out, all four now contribute equally to their success.
Looking forward, aespa plans to perform 41 shows worldwide in 2024-2025. Their tour begins in Seattle on January 28, 2025, covering North America and Europe, before ending in Madrid on March 12.
While they dominate in South Korea and Japan, critics suggest they need to expand their international presence to become truly global stars.
