A YouTuber, Dominik “Domtendo” Neumayer, successfully fought back against a fake Nintendo lawyer who was trying to take down his videos on YouTube.
The DMCA takedowns could have resulted in his entire channel being removed after receiving two strikes, just one away from a permanent ban.
Neumayer, a German YouTuber known for his Let’s Play videos, was shocked when his videos about The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom were targeted.
While Nintendo has previously issued takedowns, they generally view such content as free marketing, not a threat.
Neumayer became suspicious when he noticed that the takedown requests were signed by a “Nintendo lawyer,” but the email came from a ProtonMail address, which seemed unusual.
After carefully examining the situation, Neumayer reached out to Nintendo, which confirmed that the email was not legitimate.
Nintendo assured him that the lawyer’s claims did not align with their enforcement practices. Neumayer continued to receive threats from the fake lawyer, but after a week, the claims were retracted.
The situation escalated when the fake lawyer used a tool to spoof an official Nintendo email address.
However, Neumayer was able to detect the spoofed email by checking the headers. With this evidence, the fake lawyer stopped sending threats.
Neumayer, along with other affected gamers, is now calling for YouTube to update its DMCA process. He believes the current system encourages copyright abuse and makes it difficult for creators to defend their content.
