X Users Can’t Send Encrypted DMs—Feature on Hold for Now

X (Twitter)

Social network X announced on Thursday that it is pausing its encrypted direct messages (DMs) feature to work on improvements.

Users can still access their existing encrypted messages but cannot send new ones for now. The company did not say when the feature will return.

After Elon Musk acquired Twitter, he planned to revamp direct messaging and compete with privacy-focused apps like Signal.

X introduced encrypted DMs in 2023 for verified users, but the feature has several limitations. It does not support group chats, only encrypts text and links (not media), and lacks protection against certain security risks. Additionally, encrypted conversations don’t sync across devices.

X’s pause signals the company is focusing on fixing these issues to offer a better, more secure messaging experience in the future.
