Fans of Squid Game are wondering why Season 2 has only seven episodes instead of the usual nine. The mystery deepened after the shocking cliffhanger in Episode 7, where the Front Man made a major move.
Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk explained that Episode 7 was meant to be the turning point of the season. He said that he originally planned Seasons 2 and 3 as one long story.
However, as the story grew, it became too complex for just one season. He felt the end of Episode 7 was the perfect place to split the story and set up a second season.
Dong-hyuk also revealed that both Seasons 2 and 3 were being filmed at the same time. Season 3 is already in post-production and is expected to release in 2025.
The decision to end Season 2 at Episode 7 was not only due to the storyline but also to give Seong Gi-hun (Player 456) a chance to experience more character growth.
The failure of his revolt and the loss of his best friend, Jong-bae, were crucial events that would shape his journey in Season 3.
The season ended with a dramatic twist, with the Front Man killing Jong-bae, and a mid-credits scene teased an even more dangerous version of the Red Light, Green Light game.
The final clash between Gi-hun and the Front Man is expected to be a major part of Season 3.
All episodes of Squid Game Season 2 are streaming on Netflix.
