BTS has officially revealed the title of their upcoming fifth full-length album, Arirang. The album will be released on March 20, 2026, in multiple physical versions. The announcement was made on January 5 through the fan platform Weverse.
According to Big Hit Entertainment, the album will explore the emotional journey and personal reflections of all seven members over the years. The choice of the title Arirang carries deep cultural and emotional meaning in Korea.
Arirang is a traditional Korean folk song that dates back more than 600 years. It has no known original composer and has been passed down through generations. There are more than 3,600 variations of the song across different regions of Korea.
The song is closely linked to the concept of “han,” a uniquely Korean emotion that combines sorrow, longing, grief, resilience, and hope. Many versions of Arirang focus on themes such as separation, loss, hardship, perseverance, and reunion.
Because of its cultural importance, Arirang has been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. Both South Korea and North Korea submitted versions of the song to the list in 2012 and 2014.
The word “Arirang” itself has several interpretations. Some linguists believe “ari” means “beautiful” and “rang” means “the one,” giving it the meaning “beautiful one.” Others say the word expresses deep longing or yearning for someone who is loved but far away.
For BTS, the album title strongly reflects their recent history. Since announcing a group hiatus in 2022, the members completed their mandatory military service and focused on solo projects. During that time, the group remained separated but continued to prepare for a reunion.
Music critics believe Arirang represents both BTS and their fans, ARMY. The title reflects the long wait, emotional distance, and eventual reunion between the group and their supporters.
The album title also signals a return to BTS’ cultural roots. After years of global success and English-language releases, choosing Arirang highlights a renewed focus on Korean identity and tradition.
With Arirang, BTS frames their comeback as a continuation of a shared journey—one shaped by endurance, patience, and finally, coming together again.
