Who Was Didarul Islam? The NYPD Officer Killed While Saving Lives

Several streets in Midtown were blocked off in the aftermath of the rampage.

A mass shooting at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan on Monday, July 28, left five people dead, including the gunman. The tragedy unfolded inside the high-rise office building that houses the NFL headquarters, along with offices for Blackstone, KPMG, and other firms. Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the attack, which also left several injured.

NYPD Officer Killed Protecting Others

Among the victims was Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old NYPD officer originally from Bangladesh. Islam, who had served in the 47th Precinct in the Bronx for over three years, was working an off-duty security shift in the building’s lobby when the gunman opened fire.

Islam was the first person shot, reportedly while trying to protect civilians. He is survived by his pregnant wife and two children. Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised Islam as a “true blue hero”, stating he represented the best of New York.

“Officer Islam’s courage will never be forgotten,” said Mayor Adams. “He gave his life protecting others.”

Three Other Civilian Victims Identified Only by Gender

Authorities confirmed that two men and one woman were also killed. One male victim was shot alongside Officer Islam in the lobby. The female victim was found on the 33rd floor, where the shooter continued his attack. Their names, ages, and affiliations have not been released pending family notifications.

One other civilian remains critically injured at New York Presbyterian Hospital, and four others suffered minor injuries while fleeing the scene.

Gunman Identified as Shane Devon Tamura

The shooter, 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the 33rd floor. He reportedly drove cross-country to New York before launching the attack.

Police say Tamura had a documented history of mental illness. A note recovered at the scene pointed to paranoia and rage, possibly connected to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) from his days as a high school football player. However, investigators have not confirmed a clear motive.

“We are examining all evidence, including digital devices and writings, to understand what drove this tragic act,” said an NYPD spokesperson.

The FBI is assisting the NYPD in the ongoing investigation.
