Many PS5 owners have criticized the console for lacking enough first-party games, and while Sony has been working on a few major titles, 2025’s release schedule remains slim.
The latest State of Play in February 2025 relied mostly on third-party games, leaving many wondering about the future of Sony’s in-house development.
Let’s take a closer look at Sony’s internal studios and what they’re currently working on, as well as what PlayStation owners can expect from these developers in the coming years.
Naughty Dog
Despite the immense success of The Last of Us, Naughty Dog’s next project is not The Last of Us Part III but an entirely new sci-fi IP titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
Revealed briefly at The Game Awards 2024, the game appears to be a third-person action adventure, though with a unique 1980s-inspired sci-fi setting.
No release date has been set, and the studio’s plans for the PlayStation 5 also include multiple single-player projects, with rumors suggesting that one could be a new Uncharted or a fantasy game.
Santa Monica Studio
Santa Monica Studio has been primarily focused on God of War titles since 2005. Following the success of God of War Ragnarök, the studio may continue with another God of War installment, but there is also speculation about a new IP, potentially a sci-fi game.
Sucker Punch Productions
After the massive success of Ghost of Tsushima in 2020, Sucker Punch confirmed that a sequel, titled Ghost of Yōtei, is in development. Set over 300 years after the original, this game will feature a new protagonist and explore a new chapter in the series. There’s also been speculation about a potential new Sly Cooper or inFamous game, but these have been ruled out by the studio.
Bend Studio
After the release of Days Gone, Bend Studio initially planned to work on a new multiplayer IP, a military shooter, but the project was canceled. The studio is now left to pitch new ideas to Sony. Meanwhile, Days Gone will receive a remaster for PS5 in April 2025.
Insomniac Games
Known for its Spider-Man games, Insomniac is working on Wolverine, a new Marvel title. Despite a major setback in late 2023 when hackers leaked game footage, Wolverine remains in development. Insomniac has also teased other projects, including a potential Venom spin-off, a Ratchet & Clank game, and Spider-Man 3.
Bluepoint Games
Bluepoint, famous for remasters like Demon’s Souls (2020), is working on an original game after being acquired by Sony in 2021. While it was originally thought to be a God of War spin-off, the project was canceled in January 2025, leaving fans to wonder what the studio will do next.
Haven Studios
Sony acquired Haven Studios in 2022, and its debut title, Fairgame$, is reportedly still on track despite rumors of delays. Expected to be released in 2026, Fairgame$ has shown positive internal feedback.
Guerrilla Games
Guerrilla Games is working on a multiplayer spin-off of the Horizon franchise, confirmed through job listings in 2022. Although a full sequel to Horizon Forbidden West is in the works, Aloy’s story may not continue until the PlayStation 6.
Media Molecule
Media Molecule, known for Dreams, is transitioning to a new project. While there’s no confirmation yet, its past work with user-generated content could lead to a new game focused on similar themes.
Housemarque
Housemarque, the studio behind Returnal, is developing Saros, a new third-person action roguelike. Expected in 2026, Saros is described as a spiritual successor to Returnal but with a more forgiving gameplay experience.
Firesprite
Firesprite, who previously worked on Horizon Call of the Mountain, is reportedly working on a narrative-driven horror game and was also involved with a Twisted Metal reboot, though this project has since been canceled.
Polyphony Digital
After the release of Gran Turismo 7, Polyphony Digital has been focused on updates and new content. Gran Turismo 8 is likely in development, though no official announcements have been made.
Team Asobi
Following the success of Astro Bot and its VR game, Team Asobi is expected to continue working on family-friendly titles. There is strong speculation that a new Astro Bot game could be in the works.
Bungie
Bungie, the creators of Destiny 2, is reportedly focused on its upcoming Marathon reboot, a live-service game. The studio has faced challenges since being acquired by Sony, but Marathon could prove pivotal in the future of Bungie under Sony’s leadership.
