A Game of Thrones movie is officially in development, and it could bring one of the biggest stories in the fantasy world to the big screen.
Reports say Warner Bros. is working on a feature film set in the universe created by George R. R. Martin. The studio has hired writer Beau Willimon, who is known for shows like House of Cards and Andor, to write the screenplay. An early draft has already been submitted, and the project is described as firmly in development.
The planned film will reportedly be a prequel. It will take place around 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, exploring the early history of the world of Westeros.
The story is expected to focus on Aegon I Targaryen and the famous conquest that united most of the Seven Kingdoms. Alongside his sister-wives Rhaenys Targaryen and Visenya Targaryen, Aegon used dragons and war to defeat rival kingdoms and establish the Targaryen dynasty and the Iron Throne.
This historic event, often called Aegon’s Conquest, has been mentioned many times in the franchise but has never been fully shown on screen. If the movie moves forward, it could finally show the massive battles and dragons that shaped Westeros.
The project is still in very early stages. No director, cast, or release date has been announced yet, and plans could change as development continues.
Meanwhile, the Game of Thrones universe keeps growing on television. The hit prequel House of the Dragon is about to premier it’s third season, while another new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is already streaming.
Interestingly, a TV adaptation of Aegon’s Conquest is also being explored by HBO, meaning fans could see different versions of the same legendary story in the future.
If the movie goes ahead, it could be the first time the world of Game of Thrones appears on the big screen, bringing its dragons and epic battles to cinemas in a much bigger way.
