UK Tech Minister Rejects Big Tech Pressure on Online Safety Laws

Peter Kyle, the UK technology secretary, has made it clear that Britain’s new online safety laws will not be changed despite criticism from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg had attacked countries, including the UK, for laws he sees as restricting free speech.

Kyle responded, saying the UK’s Online Safety Act, which aims to protect children and vulnerable people online, will not be watered down to please tech companies. He emphasized that access to the UK economy is a privilege, not a right.

Online Safety Act

The Online Safety Act requires social media platforms to remove illegal content and allow users to filter harmful material. Kyle said the law ensures safety without compromising free speech.

Pressure from Big Tech

Zuckerberg, along with Elon Musk, has criticized the UK’s approach to online content regulation. Despite this, Kyle remains focused on promoting tech investment in the UK, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI).

Kyle stressed that the UK will balance innovation with safety, aiming to make the country a global leader in AI development.
