Trump’s Legal Troubles Span Criminal Cases, Civil Judgments, and Business Controversies

U.S. President Donald Trump continues to face extensive legal scrutiny in 2025, with a history of criminal charges, civil penalties, and high-profile disputes stretching back decades.

Trump has been indicted four times since 2023, facing a total of 88 criminal charges after dismissals, down from an initial 91. In the New York hush money case, he was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records linked to payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.

He received an unconditional discharge in January 2025, keeping the felony convictions without further penalties. Other charges across multiple cases involve election interference, mishandling classified documents, and fraud, all of which he denies.

Civil litigation has brought some of Trump’s largest financial penalties. In February 2024, a New York judge found Trump and his company guilty of fraud for inflating asset values to secure favorable loans and insurance. The penalty totaled $464 million, including interest, and imposed a three-year restriction on his business activities in the state. Trump has appealed, calling the case politically driven.

Separately, writer E. Jean Carroll won two defamation cases against Trump over his denials of her sexual assault allegations, resulting in judgments exceeding $90 million with interest. In 2023, a jury found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation, awarding $5 million. A second trial in January 2024 added $83.3 million. Appeals remain ongoing.

Trump’s political career has also been marked by two impeachments — in 2019 over abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, and in 2021 for incitement of insurrection following the January 6 Capitol attack. He was acquitted by the Senate both times.

His business record includes six corporate bankruptcies between 1991 and 2014, mostly tied to Atlantic City casinos. The Trump Foundation was dissolved in 2018 after being accused of operating as a personal and political funding source, with Trump ordered to pay $2 million in restitution. Trump University closed in 2010 amid fraud lawsuits, later settling for $25 million without admitting wrongdoing.

Beyond the courts, Trump has faced decades of personal allegations, including claims of sexual misconduct from at least 26 women, all of which he denies. Recently unsealed documents from Jeffrey Epstein’s files revealed Trump flew on Epstein’s plane seven times in the 1990s, though no misconduct was alleged.

As of 2025, Trump is appealing several rulings while continuing to deny all accusations, framing many cases as politically motivated. His legal and financial challenges remain unresolved, with significant potential consequences in the months ahead.
