President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he is reducing the deadline he gave Russian President Vladimir Putin to reach a peace deal with Ukraine. The new deadline is about 10 to 12 days from now, down from the original 50 days set in mid-July.
Trump said if no agreement is reached by then, the U.S. will impose massive “secondary tariffs” on Russia’s trade partners, along with sanctions.
Speaking in Scotland during a meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump said he was disappointed with Putin. “There’s no reason they’re waiting,” he said, adding that progress toward peace has been too slow.
Trump plans to formally announce the new deadline soon. He stressed that if the outcome is known, there is no need to wait.
Earlier, Trump had warned that buyers of Russian exports would face tariffs of about 100% if Russia did not agree to a ceasefire by early September.
Though Trump once avoided criticizing Putin, his tone has shifted as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has continued. He said that Putin often signals willingness to end fighting during calls, only to resume military attacks soon after.
“Russia and Ukraine — I would have said five times we had a deal,” Trump said, “Then President Putin launches rockets into a city like Kyiv and kills a lot of people.”
