Trump Administration Scraps Climate, Gender, and Health Data

The Trump administration has begun an extensive purge of federal data, removing key resources related to climate change, racial equity, and gender identity.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has taken down its main data portal, including resources on health issues such as chronic diseases, traffic injuries, and vaccination rates, to comply with a new executive order.

The CDC’s Social Vulnerability Index and Environmental Justice Index were both removed, tools that previously helped identify health risks faced by disadvantaged communities.

Historical Context of Data Removal

This move follows previous efforts by Trump to erase government resources addressing climate change, health disparities, and diversity.

Under his first term, 20% of the EPA’s website was wiped, and now, similar actions are unfolding rapidly. The Department of Transportation also removed content on climate and sustainability as part of a broader effort to undo Biden-era policies.

Concerns About Impact on Public Health

These actions raise concerns about the accessibility and accuracy of public health data, particularly for vulnerable populations.

Researchers have archived some of this data, but there are worries about its relevance and updates.

Although some datasets are preserved, aging data may no longer reflect current conditions, risking inaccurate decision-making.

Global Health Data Also Affected

In addition to domestic health data, resources like the PEPFAR (President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) website, which tracks HIV and AIDS data, were also taken down. This comes as part of broader efforts to limit foreign aid and focus on domestic policy.

The End of Term Web Archive and initiatives like the Environmental Data and Governance Initiative are working to safeguard these critical datasets.
