Tom Cruise has touched down in Cannes, hoping that a grand premiere of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will help bring the legendary franchise back to its former box office power. With the film’s debut lighting up massive 4K displays across the Croisette, the buzz around this cinematic sendoff is intense.

Now 62, Cruise has taken the global promotional tour to new heights—literally scaling the BFI Imax theater in London and leaping from helicopters to hype his final mission as Ethan Hunt. He even ventured into uncharted social media territory with a TikTok interview, all in an effort to sell this as a must-see theatrical experience.

The stakes are higher than ever. After the lukewarm domestic performance of 2023’s Dead Reckoning—which cost nearly $300 million to produce and needed another $100 million-plus in marketing—Cruise is betting everything on Final Reckoning delivering a global box office triumph. Despite mixed returns in China, Dead Reckoning became the franchise’s top performer internationally.

The new film’s budget reportedly nears or exceeds $400 million, rivaling the scale of an Avengers or Fast & Furious production. Though originally pitched as being filmed together with its predecessor, insiders say Final Reckoning was actually shot consecutively.

Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning

Cruise has long championed the franchise as a symbol of true blockbuster filmmaking, famously scolding crew members during COVID-19 protocols to protect production continuity. For him, Mission: Impossible is more than a franchise—it’s personal. It was the first film he ever produced, and its death-defying stunts have defined his modern-day career.

Industry insiders say Cruise is embracing this Cannes premiere as a crucial moment. “This movie is the cinematic equivalent of the biggest ride at the theme park,” says Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore. If all goes well, Final Reckoning won’t just wrap up an eight-film saga—it could re-cement Cruise’s place as one of the greatest movie stars of all time.

Paramount is optimistic. With premium formats like IMAX heavily promoted, the studio believes the film is on track to outperform all prior entries. For Cruise, Final Reckoning isn’t just another movie—it’s a career-defining exit, and he’s pulling every lever to make sure the world takes notice.
