In an unexpected yet fascinating crossover, Timothée Chalamet and Kendrick Lamar sat down for an introspective conversation ahead of the Super Bowl halftime show, where Lamar is set to perform.
Aired on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football”, the three-minute, black-and-white clip featured the Oscar-nominated actor and Grammy-winning rapper cruising in a classic GNX. The two artists discussed their creative process, the importance of embracing failure, and how vulnerability fuels their art.
Lamar kicked off the conversation by asking Chalamet about how he hones his craft between projects.
“The thing about acting is, if you don’t have an audience, it’s just a form of insanity,” Chalamet mused. “I try to warm up and lose that self-consciousness when I finally get back out there. But that takes time.”
He also spoke about his mindset on failure: “The most important part of a bad day is the way you leave it. If you can leave a bad take or a bad day with a positive attitude, then you’ve got nothing to fear.”
For Lamar, constant creation is key, even if not every idea makes the final cut. “I’m always locked in and always trying new things. I have to keep the pen moving. It’s my form of sanity,” he shared.
He reflected on how writing music allows him to explore emotions he may not have otherwise confronted. “A lot of these records I write, man, a lot of stuff I probably would have never expressed or even known about myself if it wasn’t for an instrumental behind it.”
Chalamet, a longtime fan of Lamar, took a moment to acknowledge the rapper’s achievements. “Just being a fan of your music forever and knowing like, look where you’re at now, man. It’s just crazy—Super Bowl halftime show. And you just keep climbing, bro. It’s amazing.”
The Dune star has long been a rap and sports enthusiast, citing Kid Cudi as an inspiration for pursuing art. He has even dabbled in rap himself, with viral videos of him performing an original math-class rap and channeling Nicki Minaj in a high school talent show.
As for sports, Chalamet is a lifelong Knicks fan and previously appeared on ESPN’s “College Game Day”, where he correctly predicted Ohio University’s upset against Miami in the MAC Championship.
With Lamar set to take the Super Bowl stage on Sunday during the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Philadelphia Eagles showdown in New Orleans, fans can only wonder what creative surprises he has in store.
