A man in Germany thought he had found a great deal when he bought a 2TB hard drive at a flea market for just over €2. But the cheap price came with a big problem: the hard drive was fake.
After connecting the drive, it made two clicking sounds and stopped working. Curious, the buyer opened the case to check the inside. What he found was surprising — the most important parts of the hard drive, the magnetic platters, were missing. In simple terms, it wasn’t a hard drive at all, just an empty shell.
The case still had some parts inside to make it look real. Even the weight felt almost normal. Most people would not notice anything wrong just by holding it. That’s what made the scam hard to detect.
The man had bought the drive in 2023, but the story is now making the rounds online as a warning. A new 2TB hard drive normally costs around €50 to €60, or at least €20 to €25 if used. Getting one for just €2 was simply too good to be true.
This case shows the risks of buying tech gear at markets or from unknown sellers. A low price might seem like a win, but it can also mean trouble. Shoppers are advised to stay alert and be careful, especially when deals look too perfect.
