Prime Video has officially canceled The Wheel of Time after three seasons, ending the ambitious fantasy series that helped launch the genre on the platform. The decision comes more than a month after Season 3’s finale aired on April 17, 2025.

Despite being creatively praised and ranking 97% on Rotten Tomatoes for its third season—up from 86% for Season 2 and 81% for Season 1—the show was deemed too expensive to continue, especially in today’s cost-conscious streaming landscape.

According to sources, financial concerns outweighed the series’ global performance, leading to the cancellation after long internal discussions between Prime Video and Sony Pictures TV.

The show was a global title and hit #1 on Prime Video in multiple countries, but its U.S. viewership declined, with the show falling out of Nielsen’s Top 10 Originals chart after just three weeks in Season 3. Earlier seasons had remained on the chart for their entire runs.

Starring Rosamund Pike as Moiraine Damodred, the series debuted in 2021 and became Prime Video’s most-watched premiere of the year at the time. It remained a strong performer but couldn’t justify its high production cost into a fourth season, especially compared to newer fantasy offerings like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

The Season 3 finale was written with closure in mind, knowing cancellation was a possibility. While fans and critics hailed Season 3 as the show’s best yet, the global success and acclaim weren’t enough to keep the expensive adaptation alive.

Prime Video and Sony will still support an Emmy campaign for the final season.
