The Weeknd may not be ready to let go of his famous name after all. In a recent interview, the artist said he’s unsure about officially retiring “The Weeknd,” calling his upcoming film Hurry Up Tomorrow more of a rebirth than an ending.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, The Weeknd said: “It feels like it. I mean, I’ve kind of toyed with the idea in the past with albums. But it could also just be a rebirth. Who knows?”
This marks a shift from what he said earlier this year. In January, he told Variety that he had lost interest in the persona. He described it as a constant chase for more accolades, more shows, more No. 1s, saying, “It never ends until you end it.”
Now, with the release of his new film Hurry Up Tomorrow, he seems to be viewing things differently. He said he still enjoys the challenge of trying something new and wants to find out what comes next. “I just want to know what tomorrow looks like,” he added.
Hurry Up Tomorrow, which releases in theaters on May 16, 2025, is a companion film to The Weeknd’s sixth studio album of the same name. The movie stars Jenna Ortega, Barry Keoghan, and The Weeknd himself. It was co-written by The Weeknd, Reza Fahim, and director Trey Edward Shults.
For now, it seems The Weeknd’s future may still include… The Weeknd.
