The Rookie is officially returning for season 8, and fans are already buzzing about what’s next for Officer John Nolan and the rest of the LAPD team. The long-running ABC police procedural wrapped up its season 7 finale on May 13, 2025, and not long after, the network confirmed the renewal.
ABC announced in May that The Rookie is part of its 2025-2026 scripted lineup, alongside hits like 9-1-1, Grey’s Anatomy, and Abbott Elementary. The announcement came just after the show delivered its best audience numbers in five years, with streaming success continuing on Hulu.
Nathan Fillion, who plays John Nolan and also serves as an executive producer, expressed gratitude for the renewal in a heartfelt Instagram post, saying, “Thank you all for sticking around for these 7 seasons… Let’s do this!“
When Will Season 8 Premiere?
While ABC has not given an exact release date, The Rookie is expected to return in January 2026, following the same midseason schedule as season 7. ABC’s head of TV, Craig Erwich, confirmed the plan for another uninterrupted 18-episode run, continuing on Tuesday nights, paired with Will Trent.
Who’s Returning?
No official cast list has been confirmed, but Nathan Fillion is almost certain to return. Other season 7 stars likely to come back include Eric Winter, Melissa O’Neil, Richard T. Jones, Alyssa Diaz, Mekia Cox, Shawn Ashmore, Jenna Dewan, and Lisseth Chavez.
What Will Happen in Season 8?
Season 8 will pick up unresolved threads from season 7. According to showrunner Alexi Hawley, the plot involving District Attorney Sean Del Monte’s resignation will continue. While Hawley admits he doesn’t love politics as a TV theme, he teased that there’s still more to explore in that arc.
Fans may also see the return of Pete Davidson as Nolan’s half-brother Pete. Hawley shared that they’re eager to bring him back for a future appearance.
As for Nolan and Bailey’s adoption storyline, it seems that has reached its conclusion. Their application was denied due to their dangerous professions, and Hawley confirmed the couple has come to terms with it — at least for now.
Where to Watch
All seven seasons of The Rookie are currently streaming on Hulu, making it easy for fans to catch up before season 8 drops.
With the writers already working on new episodes, season 8 promises to bring more action, drama, and emotional twists as John Nolan continues his ever-evolving journey as one of L.A.’s finest.
