Apple TV+’s Shrinking uses costumes to tell its characters’ emotional stories. The show’s costume designer, Allyson Fanger, focuses on how clothes reveal inner feelings and growth.
From Jimmy’s messy wardrobe to Gaby’s vibrant outfits, fashion plays a key role in the show.
Jimmy Laird (Jason Segel) starts the series in ill-fitting clothes that reflect his grief after his wife’s death. His wardrobe in Season 1 is disheveled to show his emotional collapse.
As he begins to heal, his clothes gradually become more polished, showing his personal growth. “His clothes were intentionally messy to mirror his internal chaos,” says Fanger.
Gaby, played by Jessica Williams, contrasts with Jimmy’s somber look. Gaby’s bright colors and bold patterns reflect her optimistic and confident personality.
Fanger chose vibrant clothes for Gaby to make her stand out as a warm and approachable character. “Her clothes had to reflect her light,” Fanger explains.
Dr. Paul Rhoades, played by Harrison Ford, is always seen in crisp, tailored suits, which reflect his calm and authoritative character. His wardrobe stays polished throughout the show, showing his stability and control.
Liz (Christa Miller), Jimmy’s neighbor, has a relaxed, fashionable style. Her wardrobe mixes casual and chic pieces, helping her fit her role as a cool, laid-back character. Fanger notes, “Liz’s look is effortless but stylish, like a typical LA mom.”
As Shrinking moves forward, the costumes will continue to evolve with the characters. Fanger says Jimmy’s wardrobe will become sharper as he moves toward healing, reflecting his emotional progress.
The clothes in Shrinking are not just about fashion—they help tell the emotional stories of the characters, making the show even more engaging.
